Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums, which gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically susceptible individuals. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons, which irritate the gums. They may cause them to turn red, swell and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth, causing pockets (spaces) to form.

Plaque can also harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). This can occur both above and below the gum line. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss. With periodontal disease, bleeding, redness and swelling do not have to be present. Further, pain is usually not associated with periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease damages the teeth, gum and jawbone of more than 80% of Americans by age 45. They may cause them to turn red, swell and bleed easily.

Peri-implantitis is a destructive inflammatory reaction affecting the soft tissues and the bone around an implant.  The symptoms of peri-implantitis are in addition to bleeding, redness and swelling, the bone around the implant has been partially destroyed, usually without any pain.  There is usually infection present. Bone loss can be detected with an x-ray and by checking pocket depths. Frequent causes of peri-implantitis are smoking, diabetes, neglect, previous history of gum disease, excess cement, and excess biting forces. Typically, once the disease process has reached this stage, surgical intervention is necessary.

A small amount of light energy from a special laser is directed through a tiny fiber, which is gently placed between the gum and tooth. This light energy removes the diseased tissue on the inside of this pocket and aids in reducing the bacteria associated with gum disease. Tarter is dislodged with the help of the laser and removed using ultrasonic sound waves. Sterilization is imperative when dealing with any type of infection in the body. With this next-generation laser gum therapy, we are achieving an amazingly high bacterial kill ratio.

With conventional treatment, the problem in eliminating bacteria is that it can hide inside soft tissue. With lasers, it’s no longer a problem. The laser is used again to help seal the gum to the tooth, creating a biological band-aid. This clean, stable environment, allows the body to heal the area naturally, similar to the way it heals a broken arm. The beauty of laser gum therapy is that it not only eliminates periodontal infection, but it actually stimulates repair of the damaged gum and bone. It also lowers your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and possibly even Alzheimers.

Arrived early. Seen early. Dental tech took the time to explain what was being done and provided welcome advice on how to improve my dental techniques at home. Waited only a few moments between end of cleaning and arrival of Dr Sanders who conducted an exam. WELL DONE.

I wasn't looking forward to having my tooth extracted, (who does, right?) but Dr. Saunders and his awesome assistant, Roxy are top notch. I didn't have a choice, about my tooth BUT I did have a choice where I went. Thank you for a painless experience. Roxy's pat on my shoulder was comforting, as well as Dr S. describing what he was doing. No anxiety at all! I highly recommend your practice.
