Your 2020 Resolutions for Healthier Gums and Teeth

If you’re like one of the thousands of people in Conroe who are setting resolutions for the New Year, some of the first things that come to mind are probably related to health, money, or travel. A lot of us want to get out of debt, lose weight, or exercise more. It’s no surprise that most of us can’t even make it past January without slipping into our old habits.

But what if you could set a few simple resolutions for having a healthier smile, and as a result, enjoy better overall health too? You don’t necessarily have to see a cosmetic dentist, Conroe periodontist Dr. Kip Saunders recommends starting with some of these easy resolutions that you can start ASAP.

Drink More Water.

Water is calorie free, sugar free, and fat free. It’s also good for your teeth! Drinking water throughout the day helps rinse away loose bacteria, neutralize acids from that last snack, and keep your mouth hydrated. For an added bonus, keep a refillable bottle with tap water, which contains regulated fluoride levels for stronger teeth and bones.

Focus on Your Gumlines.

Your gums are the important foundation that keeps teeth stable and protect you against unwanted bone loss. When they’re red or bleeding, your entire mouth is at risk. Pay particular attention to the edges of your gumlines when it’s time to brush. Angle the bristles towards your gums, making short strokes that gently stimulate your gingiva. If you’ve had gum disease, a little bleeding is normal. Don’t brush too hard or aggressively, as the repetitive stress could cause your tissue to recede.

Find New Ways to Clean In-between.

If you see a family or cosmetic dentist in The Woodlands, you’ve probably told them how much you hate flossing. Fortunately, there are other ways to reach the plaque between your teeth and under your gums. A water flosser, floss pick, or proxy brush are just a few examples. Water flossers tend to work best, as they can reach well below your gumlines in deep pockets. So, if you’re someone that our Conroe Periodontist has seen for gum treatments, investing in a water flosser is a smart choice.

Invest in an Electric Toothbrush.

Simply put, electric toothbrushes clean your teeth more thoroughly than manual ones, because they do all of the work for you. All you have to do is place them in the correct position and hold them there for several seconds. Just remember, you get what you pay for. A higher end electric brush will usually be gentler and more thorough than the one you find for $5-10. Some even have programs where you can subscribe to have a replacement brush head mailed to you every 3 months so that you don’t forget to change it out.
